Perfection must not be the enemy of the good
Augmentation therapy or AT is an apt treatment for people suffering from Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency. Alpha-1 antitrypsin proteins extracted from the blood of healthy donors are used to increase the amount of AAT in the lungs of those patients who suffer from a deficiency of AAT. Augmentation therapy is only helpful in hindering further lung deterioration. It does not reverse the damage that’s already there.
The main goals of therapy are:
- 1. Increasing the level of AAT in the patients.
- 2. Protecting the organs against the destructive effects of neutrophil elastase.
- 3. Slows down lung deterioration.
- 4. Acts as the first-hand response to Alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency.
- 5. Hindering the disease from possessing other organs.
